After spending time in auditing and finance, Ravi joined the railways 21 years ago in Metrorail as a regional financial manager and then went on to become its Chief Financial Officer. Metrorail was separating from Spoornet and Ravi led the negotiations for Metrorail with the then South African Rail Commuter Corporation for setting up the first 5 year “concession” like operating agreement together with implementing country wide financial systems, structures and processes for Metrorail.
Thereafter, Ravi joined Transnet Freight Rail (then Spoornet) as General Manager Restructuring and Joint Ventures where he turned around the loss making Joint Ventures into a profit making business.
Thereafter he became General Manager for the General Freight Business as the largest business in Spoornet, responsible for marketing, sales and operations. Here he implemented a robust pricing strategy that dealt with a legacy of unprofitable customers.
Thereafter he moved on to become General Manager Operations and then General Manager National Operations Centre (NOC) where he and his team set up the current National Command Centre. After this, he moved on to General Manager, Sales & Marketing at Spoornet where he focused on key account planning and logistics collaboration initiatives with customers.
In 2014, he was appointed as the General Manager Steel & Cement Business Unit. After this he moved to the office of the COO as General Manager Road to Rail, developing TFR’s Road to Rail Strategy.
Over the years, Ravi has spent time mentoring and coaching many people who went on to become executives both within and outside of Transnet. His passion lies in developing young people to become successful leaders of tomorrow. He received the TFR Chief Executive’s award in 2013 as Inspirational Leader of the Year.
He has traveled extensively across the world, studying railway operations, technology and strategy. He has also studied locally and internationally.
